Amid the pandemic, Canada stood firm in its COVID restrictions, leaving me grappling with the challenges as I bore the weight of health issues, rendering me unable to take the vaccine. Yearly, like clockwork, I would journey back to the embrace of family and friends in Canada, but these past two years, the walls of separation confined me, preventing my return to the land I called home. Fate, however, dealt its bitter hand during the peak of the pandemic when my father succumbed to stage four lung cancer in January 2021.
Locked down within Canada's borders, I was helpless when an ill-fated bike accident shattered my shoulder, imprisoning me further in a state of recovery. At a time when I longed to pay my final respects to my departed father, I found myself stranded 3,000 miles away, incapable of attending his funeral. The arrangements for a virtual presence via Zoom seemed inadequate; the heart yearned to be physically present.
This was no ordinary trip, but a pilgrimage to my past, a journey of reminiscence, a reunion with kin, and a bittersweet homage to Dad. Old friends were sought out, their company a refuge for laughter and the recollection of audacious escapades and daring exploits. Closure to what once was, and the crafting of new memories, became my mission, so that I might share these tales with any willing ear. A wise friend once professed that life lies in unplanned exploration, for it is in the untold stories spun within the confines of a bar that life truly unfolds. And so, I had a story worth telling.
My father was a man of gentle smiles and boundless concern for others. A soft-spoken soul, he reveled in the company of family and friends. Every Saturday, he would gather us, granting my weary mother a respite from the clamor of her offspring. Our journey led to visits with cousins, followed by inevitable trips to the hardware store, his mind already crafting new construction projects wherein we were all enlisted, irrespective of our age. "If you can walk, you can help," he would assert, and so we did, gaining skills and lessons that would serve us well in our futures.
Before this chapter, I ventured to the Chillwack River, where my family had camped and fished during my Vancouver upbringing. This tranquil place held a special significance for my father, who cherished the river as much as the act of fishing itself. Here, fireside tales of his life in Italy or whimsical anecdotes from our childhood reverberated into the night. On this trip, I sought to retrieve a piece of that cherished Chillwack, which now lay forever with him.
In my hand, I held a rock, its smooth surface adorned with a gentle blend of gray and white, painted with a heart in crimson. The following morning, clutching that rock and a bottle of red wine, I paid pilgrimage to my father's grave. Placing the rock upon his resting place, I slipped another, collected from the summit of Mt. Seymour, between the headstone and the tender grass. Red wine, his cherished elixir, poured as I sat, conversing with him about life, family, and tales of old, clinking our glasses in a poignant toast to those who left us, those who remained, and the future that awaited.
As I reminisced about the little things he did for me as a child, the profound truth of his departure seemed inconceivable. My last memory of him on Christmas 2019, when his ailment burdened his body, but not his spirit. Summoning the strength to bid me farewell with a hug and a tender kiss.
Life, I learned, is far from perfect, often unjust, and over the past three years, the world's uncertainty has been its hallmark. Yet, every twist of fate, no matter how obscure, bears its purpose, though hidden from our eyes. Perhaps, in narrating these tales, I seek to impart wisdom to you, dear reader, urging you to create your own stories, to share in the tapestry of life at a bar, before life rushes past, leaving only fading echoes. In the essence of the present, lies the peace we all seek to embrace within.
