Have you ever heard of a place in the United States that can only be reached by small fishing or sailboats from the Pacific Ocean, tiny twin airplanes, or crossing through the Canadian border? Well, that place exists, and it's called Point Roberts, a fascinating geographical anomaly nestled in Washington State, USA. This small, isolated peninsula juts out from the Canadian border, but you can only access it by land from Canada or by boat. It's like a hidden gem, surrounded by water on three sides and the Canadian border on the fourth, making it an exclave of the United States.
Point Roberts is renowned for its breathtaking coastal landscapes, offering stunning views of the Salish Sea and the Gulf Islands of British Columbia. Nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers are drawn to this area for its scenic parks, hiking trails, and various water-based activities such as kayaking and fishing.
One of my favorite things to do on a leisurely summer Saturday afternoon in Point Roberts was attending the local bars' crabfest. Buying tickets allowed us to savor as many crabs and beers as we could during the meal. And fall Sundays were reserved for cheering on our favorite NFL teams while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
The charm of Point Roberts lies in its tranquility. It almost feels as if time stands still here, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature. Observing orcas and dolphins swimming not far from the shore or catching sight of a bald eagle nesting in the trees above adds to the sense of being one with nature. The sound of waves crashing against the shoreline as you stroll around town reinforces this timeless feeling.
Whenever I crossed the border, the check-in process was smooth, and I would find myself in a place I'd seen multiple times before. Life in Point Roberts was a stark contrast to the fast-paced surrounding areas where land development was rampant. Here, it was a laid-back and simple life, with everyone knowing each other and forming a close-knit community. Kiniski's Reef Tavern was one of my regular spots, and it held a special place in my heart. The tavern's namesake, Kiniski, had been a famous professional wrestler in the Pacific Northwest, and people flocked to see him bartend. He was a fantastic storyteller and had a charm that won over all the ladies who came to drink. Although Kiniski had passed away, his pictures still adorned the tavern, and his absence was palpable
As I strolled along the beach, thoughts of owning a home in this picturesque location and enjoying a leisurely life with a boat crossed my mind. Point Roberts exuded tranquility and remoteness, offering a slower pace of life compared to bustling urban areas.
On my way back to Canada, I reflected on the precious moments I had experienced, realizing that some moments couldn't be relived, as they were now memories of the past. Instead of dwelling on what was missing, I embraced the idea that life holds many precious moments, each unique and special. Point Roberts had its own charm and allure, and while it might not be the same without Kiniski, it presented an opportunity to create new precious memories.
Being so close to the Canadian border, Point Roberts posed both unique challenges and benefits, making it an intriguing destination for locals and visitors seeking an unparalleled experience in the Pacific Northwest. Its secluded beauty and the sense of being in harmony with nature made it a place worth cherishing and exploring.
