Michael Ridge was born in Spokane in 1989, and his life has been a constant journey of exploration and self-discovery. Growing up between Idaho's panhandle and Washington state, he developed a deep love for the untamed wilderness. Despite attending numerous schools, Michael found comfort in a life of constant movement, and it became his natural habitat.
One day, at the age of twenty-three, while living an ordinary life, Michael made a life-altering decision. He committed himself to becoming a modern-day mountain man, living off the land and traveling by horseback. This choice would lead him on a remarkable journey of growth and resilience.
Although Michael had no prior experience with horses, he eagerly embraced the challenge. He dedicated himself to raising and training his own horses, often taming them straight from the wild. Not only did he master horsemanship, but he also learned to create his own clothes from deer and elk skins, adorned with beads, antlers, quillwork, and braided horsehair. His resourcefulness extended to shoeing his own horses and becoming an expert forager and hunter for sustenance.
By the time Michael turned thirty, he had accumulated a wealth of experiences and skills from his years in the wild. The solitude and beauty of the untamed West had shaped his character and provided him with a unique perspective. Now, he felt a calling to share his knowledge and insights with the communities he encountered.
Michael's area of expertise lay in the abundance of wild foods found in Idaho and the greater West. He became a walking encyclopedia of information, offering kind words and ancient wisdom to anyone willing to listen. He cherished the opportunity to connect people with the natural wonders hidden among the mountains, canyons, and plateaus.
As winter approached one year, Michael found himself camped in Stites, a generous rancher providing him with a peaceful off-the-grid plot of land. With hay for his horses and ample firewood, he settled in for the season. Encouraged by the supportive locals, Michael decided to plant some of the native seeds he had collected during his travels. He understood the importance of sowing the seeds before the winter freeze, allowing them to sprout and flourish come spring. His seed bundle contained a diverse mix of companion plants and wild edibles, ready to reclaim their rightful place in the cycle of life.
Michael chose a special location for his planting endeavor—Battle Ridge, overlooking the South Fork of the Clearwater River. This site held historical significance, as it was where General Howard had executed an attack on a Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) encampment in 1877. The remnants of the battle, including rock turrets designed to withstand cannon blasts, still lingered. It felt like a profound act of restoration to reintroduce the first foods to the very ground where they had grown 143 years ago. Breadroots, lilies, berries, and fruit trees would once again thrive in harmony with the changing seasons.
Time passed, and winter enveloped the land with its freezing grasp. Michael reveled in the sense of accomplishment from another successful year of gathering resources. As he sat beside the crackling fire in his cozy tipi, the aroma of venison stew filling the air, he reflected on his life's path. Even in the midst of winter, there was always something to accomplish and create. Michael busied himself by tanning deer hides into supple buckskin, fashioning bags, jackets, moccasins, and pants. He took pleasure in intricately beading these wild crafts and braiding horsehair gifts to express his gratitude for the support he had received along his journey.
Michael knew there was no definitive end to his chosen lifestyle, but he didn't see it as a limitation. Instead, he embraced the uncertainty with open arms, finding solace in the ever-changing beauty that surrounded him. To him, the wild lands offered a constant source of inspiration and renewal.
