My connection to Vancouver dates back to when I was just four years old, and every time I return to the city, I make it a point to meet up with my childhood friends. It's astounding that even as we reach the milestone of 55 years old, we remain healthy and active in our later years. In the neighborhood where I grew up, there were several of us always hanging out on Mike's front steps, but a core group of us were constantly engaged in street hockey, embarking on bike rides in search of the end of the rainbow, or going fishing at Trout Lake. We were an active bunch, and we shared a deep sense of brotherhood and care for one another.
Growing up in East Vancouver offered a unique perspective on city life, as our neighborhood was a melting pot of immigrants and migrants who had come together to call it home. This part of Vancouver was located near numerous local shops and diners. One place we frequented was the Shack Diner, where, if we managed to scrape together a few dollars, we could indulge in a cheeseburger and a soda. This traditional soda shop had a kitchen in full view, with cooks preparing our meals right before our eyes. Duane, Alan, and I would make our way to the Shack for a juicy burger, and as we patiently waited for our food, we would discuss our plans for the day. Although our conversations revolved around various topics, deep down, our minds were truly fixated on the upcoming feast.
During this visit, I had the opportunity to meet up with Alan and Duane, and it was rather serendipitous that we found ourselves in a burger joint. The place we chose was located on Commercial Drive, in the heart of the Italy district, just a mile away from our old neighborhood. The distant memory of the Shack saddened us, as it had closed down and was set to be replaced by a new building. Instead of soda fountain drinks, we now found ourselves enjoying the array of microbrews that had taken over Vancouver's beverage scene. Little Italy, a vibrant community of Italian immigrants who had infused life and culture into the city, surrounded us.
As we sat there, reminiscing about our old neighborhood and our youth, a sense of pride filled our storytelling. The bond we had formed since the age of four was irreplaceable, and the families we grew up with became an integral part of our childhood. Thanks to Facebook, we managed to stay connected despite the distances that separated us. But whenever we were together, we seamlessly picked up where we left off, with a deep love and affection for one another.
The Cannibal Café, a trendy spot nestled in the heart of Little Italy, became our meeting place. As we savored our burgers, memories of the Shack flooded back, reminding us of the efforts we made to secure a Shack burger. We scraped together money by collecting bottles or asking our fathers for spare change. With each bite of our burgers, we relished the satisfying flavors they offered. While we couldn't help but think that nothing could beat a Shack burger, this new burger held its own, boasting incredible flavors and perfect cooking.
As our dinner drew to a close, we sat there, recalling the memories we had made while exploring Little Italy and marveling at the changes that had taken place over time. Little Italy still retained its historical roots but had also embraced the vibrant energy of the present. From traditional Italian coffee houses serving shots of espresso to trendy locations attracting new patrons, the district has evolved into a captivating blend of old and new.
As the sun began to set between the buildings, we walked along the street, embracing one another tightly as if it were our last meeting, ensuring that we would never forget the love we had for each other. We contemplated when our next brotherly encounter would take place. Sometimes, I find myself reminiscing about those moments from my youth, hanging out with Alan and Duane, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had friends like them—friends who were like brothers. The moments we shared will be forever recounted in stories passed down to our children, creating a sense that life on the 2700 block of 2nd Ave. was a timeless tale worthy of being immortalized.
